Julia Regnell

Department of Medicinal Chemistry, Uppsala University

MSc Student in Chemical Engineering

Julia Regnell is a Master’s student in Chemical Engineering at Uppsala University with a strong interest in pharmacometrics, data analysis, and drug development. She has completed multiple summer research projects focusing on clinical data processing and modeling. Her bachelor’s thesis, in collaboration with PLATINEA, explored the introduction of the antibiotic temocillin from scientific, regulatory, and economic perspectives. Julia’s academic achievements have earned her awards including Bokpriset and Best Scientific Project in Natural Sciences at Soltorgsgymnasiet.

Novel Approach for the Analysis of Oligonucleotides Using Capillary Electrophoresis

In recent years, nucleic acid-based therapeutics have emerged as a promising research field, offering novel approaches to address unmet medical needs. Among them, RNA-targeting oligonucleotides—including antisense oligonucleotides, small interfering RNA, and aptamers—represent the predominant form. Due to its proven efficiency, capillary electrophoresis is now widely used for their analysis. However, the increasing interest in this area has brought new analytical challenges in the discovery, characterization, quality control, and bioanalysis of nucleic acids. Therefore, this Master’s Thesis Project in Chemical Engineering, conducted within the Analytical Pharmaceutical Chemistry Research Group at Uppsala University, explores the potential and challenges of analyzing oligonucleotides using capillary electrophoresis—without relying on the more traditional method of capillary gel electrophoresis. Supervised by Prof. Dr. Cari Sänger – van de Griend and Jakob Haglöf, lecturer at Uppsala University, the study aims to provide valuable insights into alternative methods for oligonucleotide analysis.
