Harry Philipsen

Envalior B.V./ TI-COAST

Professor

Anja Palmans obtained a degree in chemical engineering (1992) at the Technical University of Eindhoven (TU/e, The Netherlands), and continued with a PhD on the topic of supramolecular chemistry (1997). After a Postdoc at the ETH Zürich (Switzerland) and working at DSM Research (The Netherlands), she became assistant professor at the TU/e in 2005, associate professor in 2010 and full professor in 2019. She now holds a chair in Supramolecular Chemistry and Catalysis at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry of the TU/e.

Challenges in Plastics Circularity and the Role of Analytical Sciences Therein

While primary materials follow standardized descriptions and quality controls, recycled materials lack uniform specifications. This results in batch-based testing, making large-scale reuse difficult. Key challenges include i. Many materials are composites rather than pure substances; ii. Lack of transparency in material composition; iii no standardized methods for characterizing recovered materials, making quality assurance difficult. Harry Philipsen will discuss how Analytical Sciences via better material characterization and standardization, and transparency can drive the transition to a circular system.

The New Engineering Material Powerhouse

Established in 2023 but with a combined heritage of over 100 years, Envalior brings together two established global materials players: DSM Engineering Materials and LANXESS High Performance Materials.

As a global supplier of high-performance engineering materials, Envalior has built global leadership positions in a wide variety of industries by designing and developing better, smarter, stronger, safer, smaller, lighter, longer lasting and more sustainable solutions. Their dedicated teams of industry experts, scientists and engineers work closely together with their customers to find ways to realize the impossible - 24/7, across the globe.

Strengthen analytical science and technology by joining COAST

The COAST community invests in innovation and education of analytical science. Participation in COAST allows you to leverage your analytical capabilities, both technologically and in terms of human capital. Thus, COAST helps to solve important societal challenges, such as security, (waste) water management, food safety, health, energy transition and circularity by providing fit-for-purpose measurement technologies.
